April 22nd marks the anniversary of the 1970 birth of the modern environmental movement. Earth Day has become a worldwide event, with six million Canadians joining 500 million people in over 180 countries by staging events and projects to address local environmental issues.
Earth Day founder, former US Senator Gaylord Nelson, first proposed the first nationwide environmental protest to “shake up the political establishment and force the issue onto the national agenda.”
Today there are many community led initiatives that are held on April 22nd, and indeed, throughout the entire month of April. The Earth Day Canada website has lots of interesting information that can be accessed to learn more about these initiatives and how you can get involved.
